Whitby cottages questions and answers for tourists page

One of the most common questions is we are asked about is the parking facilities in the town, which all changed in 2014 when the park-and-ride scheme was introduced. It has improved the centre of Whitby itself which has limited parking places, by encouraging people to leave their vehicles on the outskirts in the designated car park and then ride into the town centre by bus. More information here Whitby Park and Ride

And for the people, which are actually staying in Whitby for short breaks, it’s improved the situation for them also most Whitby holiday property letting company, issue all our guests complimentary parking Scratchcard which allow them to park for up to 4 days per card on the on road designated parking zones in town. Before this situation occurred, you would often get large numbers of day-trippers taking all the parking spots in the center of Whitby leaving not much space people coming in who is actually staying in Whitby on holiday.

If you would like more information about the park-and-ride, it is located at the A171/B1460 junction North of Whitby and has 450 free spaces. For people using a sat navy to find the site, follow postcode YO21 1TL.  The buses run every 15 minutes, stopping at West Cliff North Terrace, St. Hilda's Terrace and the bus station before returning to the park and ride site via the same stops. In this article also it also shows locations where guests to the town can park on the road just a little further out from the center of Whitby itself and also in the pay-and-display car parks near the center of town. Whitby Pay and Display Car Parks and other on road spots you can park free

The second subject people are often interested in regarding Whitby has been the many events which occurred during the year, which attract tourists like the Whitby Folk Festival. Other major events of the year are Whitby Regatta, Whitby Goth weekend which occurs twice a year, once in spring and once in autumn and many other attractions like the 1940s weekend which focuses on the war years. We published a page which is designed for listing the main events which occur each year so people can schedule their visits to the town. To see whats going on go to Whitby Calendar of Events

The main to physical attractions regarding Whitby's historic are buildings are Whitby Abbey and St Mary's church, both of which dominate the skyline on the East side cliffs  the River Esk. Both these buildings have a fascinating history and dominate the skyline of the town itself. Here are two little articles on our website about these historic buildings. Try our articals The History of Whitby Abbey and The History of St Marys Church Whitby

Bill Maynard of the TV programme Heartbeat approves of Endeavour Whitby Holiday Cottages

In the video below it takes you on a walking journey to the town. The film starts at Gotland’s village which became extremely popular being the centre of filming for the TV series Heartbeat with the village itself representing on-screen the fictitious village of Aidensfild? On leaving this villages it is only a very short picturesque 9 mile drive to the centre of Whitby over the North York Moors.

In the film now the walking tour start on the West Cliff with the view over towards Whitby Abbey on the East Cliff and wind down the Khyber Pass into the center of Whitby Harbour. It takes a short boat ride out to sea, which at the time of filming only cost £3 in money for half an hour trip, providing you with the lovely sight of Whitby Harbour as you enter through its twin pairs. The video tour then goes up the cobbled streets of Church Street and the ascending the 199 steps to look at St Mary's Church and Whitby Abbey.
